façade studies

Façade lighting allows us to reveal the architectural identity of a building after dark, shaping how it is perceived from near and far. It is an opportunity to express character, rhythm and materiality through light, while ensuring the building remains respectful of its context and the surrounding environment.

We approach each façade with care and control, considering how light interacts with form, texture, and scale and how it can guide the eye without overwhelming the nightscape.

Our focus is on creating compositions that feel elegant, legible and integrated into the architecture.

Exterior illumination also requires an understanding of planning regulations, environmental guidelines, and local authority requirements. We work carefully within outlines relating to obtrusive light, dark‑sky principles and energy performance. This includes controlling glare and spill light, selecting appropriate colour temperatures, and ensuring compliance with standards such as ILP Guidance Notes, SLL recommendations and any project‑specific planning conditions.

Whether enlightening a contemporary structure, a heritage building or a large‑scale development, our goal is to create façade lighting that is both expressive and responsible, a design that enhances architectural presence, enriches the urban experience and remains in harmony with its surroundings.
