According to the *Huainanzi*, "In the north, water is governed by Emperor Zhuanxu, assisted by Xuanming, who rules the winter." The Black Tortoise, associated with water, represents the north and winter. Its image combines a turtle and a snake, symbolizing cold, depth, and immortality. Also called "Tortoise-Snake" or "Xuanming," legend says it was once a giant turtle from the North Sea that supported Penglai Mountain. After years of spiritual cultivation, it achieved enlightenment and immortality, which is why stone turtles are often found in imperial tombs.
